The federal government ran a $51.3 billion surplus in January, the Treasury Department reported Friday.
The surplus was larger than the median $40.0 billion surplus predicted by economists polled by Thomson Reuters.
Outlays in January totaled $292.812 billion. Receipts totaled $344.069 billion.
In January 2016, the government ran a $55.2 billion surplus.
For the fiscal year to date, the government has a $156. 9 billion deficit, compared to a $160.4 billion deficit for the similar period on fiscal 2016.
