U.S. government deficit soars in August

The federal government ran a $214.1 billion deficit in August, the Treasury Department reported Thursday.

Outlays in August totaled $433.263 billion. Receipts totaled $219.115 billion.

In August 2017, the government ran a $107.7 billion deficit.

In July, the government ran a $76.9 billion deficit.

For the fiscal year to date, the government has an $898.11 billion deficit, compared to a $673.71 billion deficit for the similar period in fiscal 2017.
