U.S. government deficit in March larger than expected

The federal government ran a $208.7 billion deficit in March, the Treasury Department reported Wednesday.

Outlays in March totaled $419.576 billion. Receipts totaled $210.832 billion.

In March 2017, the government ran a $176.2 billion deficit.

Economists polled by IFR Markets predicted a $186.0 billion deficit.

In February, the government ran a $215.2 billion deficit.

For the fiscal year to date, the government has a $599.7 billion deficit, compared to a $526.9 billion deficit for the similar period in fiscal 2017.
