U.S. government deficit in July smaller than expected

The federal government ran a $76.9 billion deficit in July, the Treasury Department reported Friday.

Outlays in July totaled $302.131 billion. Receipts totaled $225.266 billion.

Economists polled by IFR Markets predicted a $79.0 billion deficit.

In July 2017, the government ran a $42.9 billion deficit.

In June, the government ran a $74.9 billion deficit.

For the fiscal year to date, the government has a $683.96 billion deficit, compared to a $566.01 billion deficit for the similar period in fiscal 2017.
