Unemployment Rate Falls in Puerto Rico but So Does Employment

Puerto Rico's unemployment rate fell to 15.0% in February from 15.2% in January.

However, the number of Puerto Ricans employed also fell 0.5% in February from January's level.

The rate went down because the number of unemployed declined by 2%.

The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics released the figures on March 28. They are seasonally adjusted.

The unemployment rate was 15.5% in December. The rate had been steadily increasing from May, when it was 13.5%.

In Feb. 2013 the unemployment rate was 14.0%. The number of people employed in Puerto Rico has declined by 2.1% since Feb. 2013.

On March 21 the Government Development Bank of Puerto Rico announced that the commonwealth's economic activity index remained unchanged in January from December. The index is up 1.1% from Aug. 2013.
