U. of Mich. Sept. Index at 66.6 vs. 68.9 in August

NEW YORK - The University of Michigan's preliminary September consumer sentiment index reading was 66.6, compared to the final August 68.9, the preliminary August 69.6 reading, and the final July 67.8, according to market sources.

Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted a 70.0 reading for the index.

The expectations index was 59.1, compared to 62.9 in August, 64.1 earlier in August, and 62.3 in July.

The current conditions index was 78.4, compared to 78.3 in August, 78.3 earlier in August, and 76.5 in July.

Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted a 78.8 reading for the current conditions index and 63.9 for the expectations index.

The five-year inflation expectation index was 2.8%, compared to 2.8% in August, 2.7% earlier in August, and 2.9% in July, while the one-year inflation expectation index was 2.2%, compared to 2.7% in August 2.8% earlier in August, and 2.7% in July.

The University of Michigan index is not released to the press, but only to paying subscribers.
