NEW YORK - The University of Michigan's preliminary June consumer sentiment index reading was 71.8, compared to the final May 74.3 reading, preliminary May 72.4 reading, and the final April 69.8, according to market sources.
The expectations index was 66.8, compared to 69.5 in May, 67.4 earlier in May, and 61.6 in April.
The current conditions index was 79.6, compared to 81.9 in May, 80.2 earlier in May, and 82.5 in April.
Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted a 74.0 reading for the main index, 80.8 for current conditions and 68.3 for expectations.
The five-year inflation expectation index was 3.0%, compared to 2.9% in May, 3.0% earlier in May, and 2.9% in April, while the one-year inflation expectation index was 4.0%, compared to 4.1% in May, 4.4% earlier in May, and 4.6% in April.
The University of Michigan index is not released to the press, but only to paying subscribers.
