Temporarily Derailed

Capital Metro hoped to begin its Leander-to-Austin commuter train service by late fall, but officials said last week that two of the planned nine train stations will not be ready until February or March 2009.

The agency board will meet in late September to decide if the 32-mile Metrorail service will begin in December as scheduled with seven stations or wait until all the stations are operational.

The $90 million rail project is financed in part with $60 million of bonds approved by Austin voters in 2006.

Transit officials said they expect a resolution by December of a dispute with the Federal Railroad Administration. The agency has held up the final approvals necessary to begin passenger operations due to concerns over design features of the six diesel-powered Swiss-made train cars.
