Snyder Pushes for State-Based Insurance Exchange

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder last week said the state has still not made a final decision about whether to create its own health insurance exchange or let the federal government run one as part of the new federal health care law.

A key House Republican who had helped block a state-based exchange said last week that he was now leaning toward the Michigan-run option.

The Republican governor and Senate leadership are in favor of a state-created exchange, but so far GOP House leaders have blocked it.

Snyder last week said the administration is now pushing for a partnership that would call for both federal and state involvement, but he remains hopeful that an entirely state-based exchange will be possible.

He also filed an application with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service to collaborate, according to the governor’s office.

“At this point we’re moving toward a state partnership exchange. However, we will continue to work with our legislative partners and seek more details and clarity from the federal government to make a final determination on Michigan’s path forward — whether that’s a state partnership exchange or state-based exchange,” he said in a statement.
