Small business optimism declined in January, according to the National Federation of Independent Business' monthly Small Business Optimism index, which fell to 97.9 from 100.4 in December.

Seven components of the index fell, one was flat, and two rose slightly, NFIB said.
"November and December readings were very strong, possibly from post-election euphoria," said NFIB Chief Economist Bill Dunkelberg. "January's decline was mostly due to owners being less optimistic about sales growth and business conditions, not spending and hiring plans."
