Seattle Gets New Mayor

Seattle’s mayor-elect, Mike McGinn, will have a victory party today after his narrow election triumph.

McGinn received just over 51% of the vote in the runoff election against Joe Mallahan, which came after the two challengers finished ahead of incumbent Greg Nickels in a nonpartisan primary in August. It took several days for the results to become clear as mail ballots trickled in.

Though neither man had held elective office, McGinn, a former Sierra Club chairman, positioned himself as more of an political outsider than Mallahan, a T-Mobile vice president.
