Richmond Wins Union Skirmish

Richmond won an important legal battle related to a municipality’s right to fire union workers.

The California Supreme Court ruled Monday the city violated no civil rights or labor laws by firing 18 firefighters during a fiscal crisis in 2003, according to the Contra Costa Times.

The newspaper said the decision affirms previous rulings from lower courts and the state’s Public Employee Relations Board, which rejected a claim filed by Local 188 of the International Association of Firefighters.

The IAF argued that the layoff itself impacted worker safety and should be subject to bargaining, according to the paper.
