Puerto Rico's Employment Weakened in January

Puerto Rico's employment level weakened in January.

According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, total employment declined by 0.2% in January from December. The January total was still up 1.2% from a year earlier.

The bureau also releases an employment survey based on a survey of non-farm employers. This showed that private sector employment in January was down 0.8% from December and 1.3% from January 2015. This survey doesn't include self-employment.

On a brighter note, the household survey showed the unemployment rate declined to 11.9%, the lowest level since July 2008.
