Puerto Rico House to Vote on Belt-tightening Measures; Unions Strike

Puerto Rico's House of Representatives is expected to vote on a budget including cuts to worker benefits and pay as soon as today, June 13.

Meanwhile, some of the government worker unions are striking.

The unions for the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority and the State Insurance Fund organized a 24 hour strike on Thursday.

Three unions for the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority started a 12 hour strike on Friday. The unions will gather on Tuesday to vote on a possible strike, the president of the main PREPA union, Ángel Figueroa Jaramillo, told The Bond Buyer.

On Friday workers in the union for the Government Development Bank of Puerto Rico went on indefinite strike to protest the governor's proposed austerity package, the Fiscal Sustainability Act. The GDB oversees the sale of government bonds and makes loans to the government and public corporations.

On April 7 the government reached a deal with unions representing 92% of its unionized workers.

Of the 120,000 workers in the executive branch of the Puerto Rico government, 41,000 are unionized, according to the government.
