Puerto Rico Gov. Alejandro García Padilla announced Friday the planned start of construction of a train line between San Juan and Caguas.
San Juan is the capital city of Puerto Rico and had a population of 390,000 in 2011. Caguas is 15 to 20 miles south and had a population of 143,000 in 2011.
The initial phase of construction will involve the construction of express, alternating direction highway lanes as well as a train line.
The Federal Highway Administration is funding the construction, according to a professional in the governor's office. It will invest $137 million. No commonwealth government funds are expected to be used for this project, the professional said.
Ultimately the train and express highway lanes are expected to connect Caguas to the Tren Urbano, San Juan's subway system.
In October Puerto Rico's government plans to pick companies to start construction.
