The University of Michigan's preliminary October consumer sentiment index reading was 87.9, compared to the final September 91.2, and the preliminary September 89.8, according to market sources.
The expectations index was 76.6, compared to the final September 82.7, and the preliminary September 81.1.
The current conditions index was 105.5, compared to the final September 104.2, and the preliminary September 103.5.
Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted a 92.0 reading for the main index, 82.7 for expectations and 104.7 for current conditions.
The five-year inflation expectation index was 2.4%, compared to 2.6% in September, while the one-year inflation expectation index was 2.4%, compared to 2.4% in September.
The University of Michigan index is not released to the press, but only to paying subscribers.
