The University of Michigan's preliminary July consumer sentiment index reading was 89.5, compared to the final June 93.5, according to market sources.
The expectations index was 77.1, compared to the final June 82.4.
The current conditions index was 108.7, compared to the final June 110.8.
Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted a 93.5 reading for the main index, 81.0 for expectations and 109.0 for current conditions.
The University of Michigan index is not released to the press, but only to paying subscribers.
