Preliminary January U. of Mich. Index at 80.4 vs. 82.5 in December

The University of Michigan's preliminary January consumer sentiment index reading was 80.4, compared to the final December 82.5, the preliminary December 82.5, and the final November 75.1, according to market sources.

The expectations index was 70.9, compared to 72.1 in December, 72.7 earlier in December, and 66.8 in November.

The current conditions index was 95.2, compared to 98.6 in December, 97.9 earlier in December, and 88.0 in November.

Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted an 83.5 reading for the main index, 99.0 for current conditions and 73.8 for expectations.

The five-year inflation expectation index was 2.9%, compared to 2.7% in December, while the one-year inflation expectation index was 3.0%, compared to 3.0% in December.

The University of Michigan index is not released to the press, but only to paying subscribers.
