WASHINGTON - Retail sales were up 0.5% in October after rising a revised 1.1% in September, the Commerce Department reported Tuesday.
The October gain was higher than the 0.2% median increase projected by economists polled by Thomson Reuters.
Excluding autos, retail sales were up 0.6%, the highest gain since March 2011, when they rose 1.2%.
The October increase for sales excluding autos was higher than the median 0.2% gain projected by economists polled by Thomson Reuters.
Excluding autos and gas, retail sales were up 0.7% in October and increased a revised 0.5% the previous month.
