Obituary

Stephanie Gibson, a managing director of Public Financial Management Inc. and head of the firm’s health care and higher education group, died earlier this month following complications related to treatment of a rare blood disease. She was 58.

Ms. Gibson, who held an MBA from New York University, opened PFM’s Boston office when she joined the company in 1990 after working as a financial adviser at Adams, Harkness & Hill.

Ms. Gibson specialized in not-for-profit institutions and over the course of her career advised more than 120 clients, helping to sell more than $5 billion of debt. Ms. Gibson’s more prominent clients included the Massachusetts Health and Educational Facilities Authority, the Connecticut Health and Educational Facilities Authority, and the University of Maryland System.

“As a partner, Stephanie had a work ethic second to none. She would go anywhere to help anyone with a client,” PFM chief executive officer John White said in an e-mail. “There was no innovation in the business she shied away from, and no challenge a client presented that was too great for her.”

Ms. Gibson is survived by her parents, a sister, two brothers, and her longtime companion, Timothy Johnson. Prior to becoming a financial adviser, Ms. Gibson had been trained as an architect, earning a degree in the field from Pennsylvania State University.

Ms. Gibson had suffered from myelodysplastic syndrome and was being treated at Tufts New England Medical Center prior to her death Nov. 15. A memorial service will be held on Dec. 10 at 1 p.m. at the Paulist Center in Boston.
