Obituary — Scott MacArthur

Scott MacArthur, a 43-year-old municipal bond trader at RBC Capital Markets in San Francisco, died of liver cancer in Burlingame, Calif., on March 7.

Mr. MacArthur, known to friends and family as "Scotty Mac," began his career as a bond trader at Kidder Peabody & Co. in New York after graduating from Penn State University.

In 1996, he moved to Sutro & Co., which was later acquired by RBC. At the time of his death, he was RBC's institutional trader for California. He was also a member of the Municipal Bond Club and an Eagle Scout.

"He was very, very good at what he did," said Marc Greer, director and head of retail trading for RBC in Houston. "He was always thinking more about the other person than himself. That's what endeared him to our sales force and our customers."

Friends and colleagues described Mr. MacArthur as a bright, outgoing, communicative man who loved his work. Greer said he continued to work until just 10 days before his death, working hard to search out bonds his customers needed at a good price.

His colleagues said Mr. MacArthur was also the devoted father of three young children. He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Julie, and their three children, Grace, 11, Graham, 9, and Dermot, 3.

Mr. MacArthur was born to Antoinette and the late U.S. Army Lieut. Col. Graham MacArthur in Stuttgart, Germany, on March 8, 1965. He had a sister, Norma-Jean Mishkin, and a brother, Matthew MacArthur.

A funeral mass was held at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Burlingame on March 10. Mr. MacArthur's colleagues have set up a trust to benefit his wife and children. Donations may be sent to the MacArthur Family Fund #310-12262, Attn: Pam Goldman, RBC Wealth Management, 345 California St., Suite 2800, San Francisco, CA 94104.
