New Mexicans have split opinions on the recent conviction in federal court of former Treasurer Robert Vigil of one charge of attempted extortion, according to a poll by the Albuquerque Journal.
The poll involved interviews with about 800 likely voters across the state.
In the poll, 52% of the respondents believe Vigil should have been found guilty of more than one charge. The poll also found that 5% felt Vigil should have been found not guilty on all charges, 14% agreed with the verdict, and almost 30% had no opinion.
Vigil was found guilty in September at his second trial of just one of the 23 charges against him. The judge stopped the first trial when jurors were unable to agree on a verdict.
