MFA Chief Acting No Longer

Gov. John Baldacci last week chose Elizabeth Bordowitz to head up the Maine Finance Authority. Bordowitz has been the acting chief executive officer since October 2007.

“Beth Bordowitz brings twenty years of expertise to this agency, the last year and a half of which she has served as acting CEO,” Baldacci said in a statement. “Her leadership and skills have been instrumental during this very difficult global financial crisis.”

Bordowitz began working for the agency as an assistant counsel in 1989 and has been its general counsel since 1995.

The authority markets taxable and tax-exempt bonds as a conduit issuer for nonprofits and economic development projects as well as part of the state’s student loan program. Since 2003, the authority has issued $315.5 million of education loan revenue bonds, most recently a $140 million issue in 2007.

Bordowitz earned her law degree at Rutgers University and earned her bachelor’s degree at Rutgers College in 1983. She also holds a graduate degree from the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers.

Bordowitz’s appointment is subject to confirmation by the state Senate.
