New orders for manufactured goods decreased 1.0% in May, after gaining a revised 1.8% in April, first reported as a 1.9% increase, the Commerce Department reported Tuesday.
Economists polled by Thomson Reuters expected orders to fall 1.0%.
Excluding transportation, new orders grew 0.1%, after a 0.3% rise the previous month. Excluding defense, orders were down 0.3% after a 1.9% increase in April.
Durable goods orders were 2.3% lower in May after a 3.2% increase in April, while nondurable goods orders gained 0.3% in May after a 0.4% rise in April.
Transportation orders dropped 5.7% after an 8.5% increase in April.
