MARYLAND: Candidate Townsend

Lieut. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend yesterday was expected to announce her candidacy for governor.

The two-term Democrat will run for the seat being vacated by Gov. Parris N. Glendening, who also served two terms. Townsend, Maryland's first female lieutenant governor, is the eldest child of Robert and Ethel Kennedy. She has high name recognition and is already ahead in the polls.

Townsend's main opponent, state Rep. Robert Ehrlich Jr., R-2d District, announced his candidacy for governor in March and is considered the Republican front-runner. If elected, he would be the first GOP governor to serve the state in 34 years.
