Bond Buyer National Outlook Conference
The Bond Buyer's National Outlook Conference for 2015 is ongoing at the Metropolitan Club in New York City. The room is filled with muni experts and the agenda is action packed. The luncheon with speaker Kent Hiteshew, Treasury director of the office of state and local finance, remains the most highly anticipated part of the agenda. In the morning, Tom Porcelli, chief U.S. economist for RBC Capital Markets echoed Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen's statement that the market should be focused on pace of increases and not when the Federal Reserve will begin raising the Fed funds rates target, stating it doesn't matter if liftoff is in June or September.
There was also a live market survey, with a panel consisting of Assured Guaranty's managing director John Hallacy, Morgan Stanley's chief municipal strategist Michael Zezas and The Bond Buyer's own Chip Barnett, giving their thoughts on the results.
Attendees weighed in on total long-term muni volume in 2015, with 30% predicting volume will be more than $350 billion, which is what Zezas also believes.
The survey indicated participants expect the Fed to raise rates in the fourth quarter, but Zezas said he believes the Fed will not raise rates at all this year.
So what did attendees believe will be the biggest headline in 2015? 33% believe it will be SEC enforcement, 32% believe it will be pension reform and 22% think it will be the Fed raising interest rates.
