Construction spending rose 0.2% in March, the Commerce Department said, 8.4% above the March 2013 level.
In February, construction spending fell a revised 0.2%, first reported as a 0.1% increase.
Spending on private construction rose 0.5% in the month, while public construction slid 0.6%.
Residential construction grew 0.8% and single-family housing gained 0.2% in the month.
Multi-family housing increased 4.4%.
Economists polled by Thomson Reuters predicted a 0.6% rise in construction spending.
