The merger, which will become effective Feb. 1, will add 20 lawyers with expertise in securities, corporate, mutual fund, and estate matters to Foley & Lardner's Washington, D.C., office, which currently has about 100 attorneys, Foley's lawyers said.

The merger announcement comes less than a week after Foley & Lardner disclosed plans to merge with the Chicago-based law firm of Hopkins & Sutter, which has 120 lawyers.

The planned mergers will give Foley & Lardner a total of more than 900 attorneys practicing in 15 offices throughout the United States, as well as an office in Brussels, Belgium.

The mergers are part of a plan for the continued growth of the firm, Foley & Lardner's Michael Grebe said yesterday. "Our growth is part of a coordinated and strategic plan -- centered around exceeding client needs and expectations," said Grebe, the firm's chairman and chief executive. "We will establish and/or expand offices where it makes the most sense and can provide the most benefit for our clients."

Grebe indicated that the firm is targeting New York, London, and Tokyo as future areas of practice.
