Initial jobless claims rose 1,000 to 260,000 in the week ended Sept. 10, the Labor Department said Thursday.
Continuing jobless claims were 2.143 million in the week ended Sept. 3, up from 2.142 million the week before.
Economists polled by Thomson Reuters expected 265,000 initial claims and 2.140 million continuing claims.
The four-week average of initial claims was off 500 in the week ended Sept. 10 to 260,750.
