January Retail Sales Slip 0.4%; Ex-Autos Unch

Retail sales slid 0.4% in January after dipping a revised 0.1% in December, originally reported as a 0.2% increase, the Commerce Department said Thursday.

Economists polled by Thomson Reuters expected sales to be flat, with sales excluding autos up 0.1%.

Excluding autos, retail sales were unchanged in January after a 0.3% uptick the previous month, first reported as a 0.7% jump.

Excluding both autos and gas, retail sales fell 0.2% in January after a 0.1% uptick the previous month.
