WASHINGTON - The producer price index rose 0.1% in January on a seasonally adjusted basis, while the core rate surged 0.4%, the Labor Department reported Thursday.
The overall increase followed a 0.1% decrease in the index for December.
Core producer prices, which excludes food and energy, rose 0.3% in December.
The January increase in the price index was less than the 0.4% gain projected by economists polled by Thomson Reuters, but the core price index increase was greater than their median 0.2% estimated gain.
Year-over-year the overall PPI was up 4.1%. Core year-over-year producer prices were up 3.0%.
