Jan. Factory Orders Drop 0.7%; Ex-Transportation Up 0.2%

New orders for manufactured goods slumped 0.7% in January, after dropping 2.0% in December, the Commerce Department reported Thursday.

The December decrease was revised to 2.0% from the 1.5% first reported.

Economists polled by Thomson Reuters expected a 0.5% decrease in January orders.

Excluding transportation, new orders increased 0.2% in January, after dipping 0.1% the previous month. Excluding defense, orders fell 1.0%, after slipping 1.5% in December.
