Incoming Governor Taps Budget Boss

Governor-elect Neil Abercrombie Tuesday appointed Kalbert Young to head Hawaii’s Department of Budget and Finance.

Young, 41, has been the finance director of Maui County since 2004.

In addition to overseeing development of the budget, his department also has oversight over the state’s debt management and its treasury investments.

Abercrombie, a Democrat, will be inaugurated Monday, taking over from Republican Linda Lingle, who could not run again because of term limits. Abercrombie represented Hawaii in the U.S. House for almost two decades before resigning to run for governor.

Young’s appointment is one of a flurry of cabinet announcements this week heading into the inauguration.

“They are a part of our growing team dedicated to our goal of rebuilding our economy to create good-paying jobs during these difficult times while investing in the people of Hawaii,” Abercrombie said in a statement.

Young must be confirmed by the state Senate.
