Sen. Sam Slom, R-Honolulu, is pushing a proposed constitutional amendment that would ban the state and counties from using eminent domain for private development.
Slom's bill offers a local reaction - a bit later than other states - to the legal precedent set in the U.S. Supreme Court ruling, Kelo vs. New London, Conn., almost two years ago.
The Senate Committee on Intergovernmental and Military Affairs as well as the Committee on Judiciary and Labor will hear the bill on dates yet to be determined.
