Fourth Time’s the Charm

Reno County Unified School District 313 won approval last week for a $45 million bond proposal, breaking a string of three straight defeats.

Voters in the Kansas district that serves the town of Buhler rejected two bond issues in 2006 and one in 2007. The winning margin was 2,296 in favor with 1,089 opposed.

Approval will result in a 3.5 mill increase in the district’s property tax, or an extra $40 a year on a $100,000 residence.

Superintendent Dan Stiffler said many of the district schools are 50 to 80 years old, and need to be renovated.

The district will build one new elementary school in Hutchinson and close two existing ones, he said.

Reno County USD 313 has no outstanding rated debt.
