Firm to Help Craft Zoning for Downsized Detroit

An Ann Arbor-based company announced last week it will help develop zoning for Detroit Mayor Dave Bing's plan to shrink the city's urban footprint to reflect its diminished population.

Called the Detroit Works Project, Bing's plan aims to downsize the city, encourage residents to buy vacant houses and move into designated zones in an effort to improve services and come up with long term uses for vacant land.

Carlisle/Wortman Associates will develop zoning ordinances based on the plan, according to a report in Crain's Detroit Business. Detroit officials are expected to release an outline of the plan by October.
