The University of Michigan's final January consumer sentiment index reading was 98.5, compared to the preliminary January 98.1, and the final December 98.2, according to market sources.

The expectations index was 90.3, compared to the preliminary January 88.9 and the final December 89.5.

The current conditions index was 111.3, compared to the preliminary January 112.5 and the final December 111.9.

Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted a 98.1 reading for the main index, 88.9 for expectations and 112.5 for current conditions.

The five-year inflation expectation index was 2.6%, compared to 2.3% in December, while the one-year inflation expectation index was 2.6%, compared to 2.2% in December.

The University of Michigan index is not released to the press, but only to paying subscribers.
