The expectations index was 89.5, compared to preliminary December 88.9, and the final November 85.2.
The current conditions index was 111.9, compared to the preliminary December 112.1, and the final November 107.3.
Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted a 98.0 reading for the main index, 89.0 for expectations and 112.0 for current conditions.
The five-year inflation expectation index was 2.3%, compared to 2.6% in November, while the one-year inflation expectation index was 2.2%, compared to 2.4% in November.
The University of Michigan index is not released to the press, but only to paying subscribers.
