The University of Michigan's final August consumer sentiment index reading was 96.8, compared to the preliminary August 97.6 and the final July 93.4, according to market sources.
The expectations index was 87.7, compared to the preliminary August 89.0 and the final July 80.5.
The current conditions index was 110.9, compared to the preliminary August 111.0 and the final July 113.4.
Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted a 97.1 reading for the main index, 88.3 for expectations and 111.0 for current conditions.
The five-year inflation expectation index was 2.5%, compared to 2.6% in July, while the one-year inflation expectation index was 2.6%, compared to 2.6% in July.
The University of Michigan index is not released to the press, but only to paying subscribers.
