Feb. U.S. government deficit higher than expected; largest monthly shortfall

The federal government ran a record $234.0 billion deficit in February, the Treasury Department reported Friday.

The previous monthly record deficit was $231.7 billion.

Economists polled by IFR Markets predicted a $227.0 billion deficit.

In February 2018, the government ran a $215.2 billion deficit.

In January, the government ran an $8.681 billion surplus

Outlays in February totaled $401.243 billion. Receipts totaled $167.265 billion.

Year-to-date, the government had a $544.230 billion deficit, compared to a $390.957 billion deficit for fiscal 2018.
