U.S. durable goods orders climbed 0.8% in April, while excluding transportation orders grew 0.1%, the Commerce Department reported Tuesday.
Economists polled by Thomson Reuters expected a 0.5% decrease in orders and a flat reading excluding transportation.
In March, orders grew a revised 3.6%, first reported as a 2.5% increase, while excluding transportation sales gained 2.9%, initially reported as a 2.0% rise.
Excluding defense orders fell 0.8% in April after a 2.9% gain in March.
Transportation equipment orders increased 2.3% in the month.
