U.S. durable goods orders surged 2.2% in February, while excluding transportation orders grew 0.2%, the Commerce Department reported Wednesday.
Economists polled by Thomson Reuters expected a 1.0% increase in orders and a 0.3% rise excluding transportation.
In January, orders fell a revised 1.3%, first reported as a 1.0% decrease, while excluding transportation sales gained 0.9%, initially reported as a 1.1% increase.
Excluding defense orders rose 1.8% in February after a 1.9% drop in January.
Transportation equipment orders increased 6.9% in the month.
