Florida Gov. Charlie Crist announced Tuesday that he would not seek a second term as governor in 2010.
Instead, Crist, a popular Republican because of his bipartisan tendencies, said he plans to run for the seat being vacated by retiring U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez, a fellow Republican.
“Here in Florida, we’ve shown that when we put people first and work together much can be accomplished, and I intend to bring that same approach to Washington,” Crist said in a written statement. “That is why, after thoughtful consideration with my wife Carole, I have decided to run for the U.S. Senate.”
“Our country is facing the most profound public policy questions in our lifetime — questions relating to the economy, taxes, health care, the environment and national security. The answers to these questions will have a lasting impact on the country we love and the nation we will leave to our children and grandchildren.”
Crist’s announcement raised speculation that Florida’s Republican-controlled Legislature could be in danger of losing the GOP’s advantage in next year’s election especially since more Republicans than Democrats are facing term limits.
