Chandler Eyes Street Bonds

Officials in Chandler said the Phoenix suburb may need a bond program within the next five years to keep up with street upkeep expenses that are expected to almost double by 2014.

Dan Cook told the City Council’s public works committee last week that Chandler will spend $6.5 million in fiscal 2010 for maintenance and reconstruction on its 820 miles of streets. That effort is estimated to cost $11.8 million by 2014, he said.

Cook said he expects the city to seek a bond election before 2014 for street and road work.

Streets superintendent Ruth Ann Goemaat told the subcommittee that more than half of the city streets are in good shape, with only 20% in need of repaving.

Chandler’s debt is rated triple-A by all three rating agencies.
