Butler County Unified School District 375, Kansas, will build a new high school and expand an elementary in Towanda with $37.1 million of general obligation bonds authorized by a mail-in election last week.
The new high school will retain the circular dome of the existing Circle High School built in 1962 that now serves 535 students. The new school will accommodate 800 students when it opens in 2016.
Approval of the bonds will require a property tax increase to 22.9 mills from the current 16 mills. Assessed valuation has grown to $170.5 million from $101.6 million in 2002. The district also serves a portion of Wichita.
