New orders for manufactured goods gained 0.7% in April, after climbing 1.5% in March, the Commerce Department reported Tuesday.
Economists polled by Thomson Reuters expected a 0.6% increase in April orders.
Excluding transportation, new orders increased 0.5% in April, after gaining 0.8% the previous month. Excluding defense, orders fell 0.1%, after growing 1.1% in March.
Durable goods orders rose 0.6% after a 3.7% increase in March, while nondurable goods orders grew 0.7% after a 0.5% slide in March.
