Construction spending rose 0.2% in April, the Commerce Department said, 8.6% above the April 2013 level.
In March, construction spending grew a revised 0.6%, first reported as a 0.2% increase.
Spending on private construction was flat in the month, while public construction soared 0.8%.
Residential construction grew 0.1% and single-family housing gained 1.3% in the month.
Multi-family housing increased 2.7%.
Economists polled by Thomson Reuters predicted a 0.6% rise in construction spending.
