Airport Needs Set at $9.7B

A study released last week by the Arizona Department of Transportation said the state’s 83 public airports would need $9.7 billion over the next 20 years to meet the demand for aviation services.

The airports will need $486 million in funding a year for two decades, the study said, to cope with growth issues such as infrastructure, urban encroachment, security, and flight safety.

The total includes $2.5 billion for smaller airports and more than $7 billion of projects at commercial and general aviation facilities, including the proposed people-mover train at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and an expansion of the passenger terminal at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport.
