Power Outage Across Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico was hit by a major electrical outage sometime between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Wednesday.

The power is out over a wide swath of the island and some reports indicated that all of the clients of the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority were without the authority's electricity. PREPA normally provides power to nearly everyone and nearly all businesses in Puerto Rico.

PREPA initially announced that the problem was triggered by the failure of two major transmission lines.

The Puerto Rico Firefighter Department reported that there was a fire at an electrical substation in Aguirre, on the southeast coast.

As of 5 p.m. there were no reports that the power situation had improved.
