Municipal CFOs Headed to Chicago

CHICAGO — The fall meeting of the Municipal CFO Forum slated for Thursday and Friday in Chicago will focus on "financial communications."

The forum was launched by the Chicago Mayor's Office, the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy, and the Governing Institute to support "policy dialogue" and create "a peer-learning network of CFOs from the largest cities in the United States."

The agenda for the fall meeting includes a closed-door discussion led by Chicago's chief financial officer Lois Scott, who helped launch the forum on the city's behalf, to discuss topics of interest to CFOs. A panel discussion on effective communications even when news is bad will include Tim Loughran, professor at Notre Dame University, Justin Marlowe, associate professor at the University of Washington, and Paula Worthington, a senior lecturer at the Harris School.

Other speakers during the forum include Kent Hiteshew, director, Office of State and Local Finance at Treasury, and Bloomberg municipal columnist Joe Mysak.

The forum has held biannual meetings since 2012 with the spring 2014 conference in May focused on regulations, ratings and investments. Scott has said the goal of launching the forum was to establish a network for CFOs from the 30 largest cities to share their problems and solutions.

The Harris School is home of the Center for Municipal Finance. It serves as a forum for discussions and research on major financial issues facing state and local governments including privatization, revenue generation, and pension reform. The Harris School also is working with the fiscally distressed city of Gary, Ind. on an urban revitalization project assisting the city in economic development.
